A muted El Niño-like condition during late MIS 3

چکیده
The evolutionary dynamics of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) over the last glacial period remains understudied, despite its potential in providing a “cold case” for climate sensitivity studies. Here, we investigate SE Asian-Pacific paleoclimate records to decipher dominant underlying mechanism that governed tropical hydrology during MIS 3. Our results suggest emergence Sunda Shelf likely altered atmospheric circulation pattern Southeast (SE) Asia and led realignment rainfall patterns between Thailand Indonesia period. Permanent El Niño-like conditions during the Pliocene warm period.
During the warm early Pliocene (approximately 4.5 to 3.0 million years ago), the most recent interval with a climate warmer than today, the eastern Pacific thermocline was deep and the average west-to-east sea surface temperature difference across the equatorial Pacific was only 1.5 +/- 0.9 degrees C, much like it is during a modern El Niño event. Thus, the modern strong sea surface temperature...
متن کاملEarly Pliocene ( pre – Ice Age ) El Niño – like global climate : Which El Niño ?
Paleoceanographic data from sites near the equator in the eastern and western Pacifi c Ocean show that sea-surface temperatures, and apparently also the depth and temperature distribution in the thermocline, have changed markedly over the past ~4 m.y., from those resembling an El Niño state before ice sheets formed in the Northern Hemisphere to the present-day marked contrast between the easter...
متن کاملEnhanced Atlantic freshwater export during El Niño
Using two reanalysis data sets, the influence of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the surface freshwater balance of the Atlantic ocean is examined. We present evidence that the transport of water vapour out of the tropical Atlantic is enhanced during warm ENSO phases, while it is reduced during cold phases. These tropical changes alter the freshwater budget of the entire Atlantic drainage...
متن کاملEl Niño and health.
El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a climate event that originates in the Pacific Ocean but has wide-ranging consequences for weather around the world, and is especially associated with droughts and floods. The irregular occurrence of El Niño and La Niña events has implications for public health. On a global scale, the human effect of natural disasters increases during El Niño. The effect o...

Peruvians Sick of El Nifio As Peruvian officials braced for the effects of El Ninio in 1997, they suspected they might be hit with a rash of diarrhea cases. They were correct, as the diarrhea caseload in children doubled during the worst stretches of a 16-month period of above-average temperatures. An international team of researchers led by William Checkley, a researcher in the Department of I...
